In preparation for the 14th general election, post the 2008 general election or that of the 13th one, Dato' Sri Adnan said, 'The worst is over, God's willing...'
THE CLOSING CEREMONY... On the afternoon of Sunday, 21st of February, the Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Vice President of UMNO, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin solemnised the closing ceremony of the convention. Tan Sri Muhyiddin, is seen giving his speech, with Dato' Sri Adnan and the party leaders in full view. UiTM PAHANG CAMPUS, BANDAR TUN ABDUL RAZAK, JENGKA, MARAN - "The worst is over, God's willing." That was uttered by the Menteri Besar Dato' Sri Adnan Yaakob to calm the fear that was deliberately dug up by the oppositions by forecasting and convincing voters that Barisan Nasional would definitely lose in the general election. Dato' Sri Adnan believes that the 13th general election was already over. The 2008 general election witnessed BN losing two-third (2/3) of the seats at the parliament, alongside the loss of five (5) states to the opposition. "Many have said that it is the 13th election that we are preparing for. But with the consent from YAB Dato' Sri (Adnan), I would like to set the record straight, that the 13th general election was indeed the one in 2008. The one coming is the 14th election. "According to records, the very first general election was in the year 1955, on the 27th of July as the song sung by Zainal Alam went, 'Vote, ladies and gentlemen, on the 27th, the first election, go and together we vote'. That was the first general election in 1955."
RESOLUTION TO WORK HARDER... Tan Sri Muhyiddin seen handing over the resolution of the convention to Dato' Tan Mohd Aminuddin Ishak, member of the State Government exco who is also the head of UMNO Maran. "Chronologically, [the years of elections were] '55, '59, '64, '69, '74, '78, '82, '86, '90, '95, '99, 2004; therefore the year 2008 was for the 13th election. Hence, it resulted in the political 'tsunami' just as the Chinese believe that number 13 is an unlucky number. As well, the Westerners hold the same belief, that number 13 is unlucky.
RE-EVALUATING ACHIEVEMENT, PREPARING SELF "So, the worst is over, God's willing," said Dato' Sri Adnan who received a big applause from the audience of the convention during his 14-minute speech at the opening ceremony of Pahang UMNO Convention on Friday, 19th of February, 2010. Dato' Sri Adnan and Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Abdul Razak (the Prime Minister who is the President of UMNO and also the Chairman of BN) both gave a speech at the opening ceremony of the three-day convention. In conjunction with the convention, Dato' Sri Adnan, who is also the Chairman of UMNO State Liaison, suggested that all members work hard on self-improvement and getting themselves ready for the next general election. "We need to evaluate our progress and then we have to equip ourselves, improving ourselves accordingly, strengthening the party in facing the 14th general election that can occur anytime after the year 2008," added Dato' Sri Adnan. The Pahang UMNO Convention 2010, he explained, is held as a platform for UMNO members themselves to have open discussions and suggestions as an effort to empower the party. RESOLUTION AT CONVENTION TO BE THE 'BLUEPRINT' "We organise this convention with the hope that it enables all the participants, via the 60 workshops during the convention, to 'take everything off' -
IN FULL SUPPORT... In unity, leaders and members of the party expressed their support towards the issues discussed on the final day of the convention. "... screws, bolts, nuts, including the diesel engine, petrol engine, repolished, and the piston all taken apart, only to be put together again for the machine to work better," he said. The resolutions achieved at this convention will be drafted and made into a blueprint that will serve a reference, a basis or an action plan in preparation for the general election. People, said Dato' Sri Adnan, have to be consistently reminded of the UMNO's cause, which is to not only help the Malays, but to help everyone including the non-Malays in accordance with the 1Malaysia concept that was introduced by the Prime Minister. "We want to show all parties in Malaysia that UMNO is for everyone, not only for us (Malays).
THE SYMBOL OF UNITY "I would also like to mention the flag that we have back here (pointing to a big flag with a sail ship symbol on it). Before there was Barisan Nasional, founded by YAB Dato' Sri's father, the late Tun Haji Abdul Razak, in 1974, we had a sail ship. "That was the symbol of our racial unity in Malaysia that is now being brought to focus by YAB Dato' Sri through the 1Malaysia concept. And (the sail ship) has now been replaced by a scale, symbolising equality," he said. Dato' Sri Adnan went on to highlight how Pahang has been the keystone in many events in this country, including Paya Siput, Lanchang, Temerloh being the centre point of the Peninsula Malaysia replacing Benta, Lipis. The forest of Pahang is also said to be the main source of water for the whole of Peninsula Malaysia, without which - if excessively lumbered - would cause a major water shortage.
PARTICIPANTS AND ATTENDEES OF THE CONVENTION... Impressively large turn-out that portrays our unity and togetherness in strengthening the party and its cause. "With humility, we would like to state that Pahang has given our country two Prime Ministers (followed by applause), as well as Kedah. PAHANG PRODUCED TWO PRIME MINISTERS FROM ONE FAMILY "The two Prime Ministers are from one family. The father (the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein) and the son (Dato' Sri Mohd Najib). I believe this record will never be broken again," he said. "Other than that," Dato' Sri Adnan continued, "...all these years, God's willing, the manpower that we have, the Prime Ministers that we have, the UMNO leaders that we have, the veterans that we have, ladies and gentlemen; we have never lost in an election (applause). "In the year 1999, we lost eight (8). In 2004, only one - Triang. Then in 2008, we lost five (5), one (1) came back in, leaving us with four (4). (On the level of) Parliament, for the first time in 2008, the 13th general election, we lost two, Kuantan and Indera Mahkota. "Now, God's willing, with Dato' Sri up on top, with the support from all our friends, God's willing, we can get it all back if we work just a little harder (applause)."
THE OLD AND NEW... Other than those who are directly involved in politics, there are those who have been in line with the party's cause (UMNO-friendly) including both Tan Sri Ibrahim Abu Shah, the former Vice Chancellor of UiTM; and Dato' Hashim Wahab, the President of the Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang Islamic College (KIPSAS). The rest are (from left) members of Parliament, Encik Wan Salman Ismail (BN - Jengka) and Encik Mohd Zaili Besar (BN - Panching); State Government exco member who is also the head of State UMNO Information, Dato' Mohd Sahfri Ab. Aziz (BN - Bukit Ibam); and the State UMNO Secretary of Work, Encik Hanafi Abdul Latif. This photo was taken on Friday, 19th February, at the opening ceremony of the convention.
