IT'S OFFICAL... Dato' Sri Mohd Najib putting his hand on a crystal ball to officiate the convention. The officiation was conducted in a modern and sophisticated event.

Besides Dato’ Sri Adnan, the other attendees included (from the left ) State UMNO Liaison Secretary, Encik Abdul Rahim Abas; State UMNO Liaison Deputy Chairman and also member of State Government exco, Dato’ Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin; and Head of UMNO Rompin Division and also the Malaysian Ambassador to the United States, Dato’ Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis.

UiTM PAHANG BRANCH, BANDAR TUN ABDUL RAZAK, JENGKA, MARAN – The Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Abdul Razak reminded all state politicians to return to the basics in fulfilling their duties to the people which is to ensure that they are close to the people’s heart. He was speaking at the Pahang UMNO 2010 Convention on Friday, 19th February. Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib, who is also the UMNO President and the Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman, wanted his words to be heeded as the focus for all the members throughout the three-day event.

“Let us return to the basics of politics... What is the basic? The basic is that we have to win the hearts of the people... It is that simple.

“Therefore, just do it. Do your job and plan programmes. If the people complain, who will they vote for? They will vote for UMNO! Don’t let them vote or look for others. They should only vote for UMNO.”

THE PEOPLES’ SAVIOUR ...This is the photo in the “Pembela Rakyat” magazine highlighted by Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib in his officiating speech.

“If there’s flood, we should be the first to lend a hand. If someone’s house burnt down, we should be the first to be at the location and help. Do not let the people see others,” he said.

BUSH JACKET AND HIS WALKING STICK

Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib urged the members to reminiscence the grounds for the party’s establishment to remain strong in the past.

“Why were we strong? How did we stay strong? The pictures in that large bag handed over to me touched my heart. As I opened the bag and looked through, I was curious - whose pictures are these? They were pictures of the late Tun Razak in his bush jacket and walking stick. With the walking stick, he visited and looked into matters of the people in the rural areas,” he said.

The “Pembela Rakyat” magazine was published by the Pahang UMNO State Liaison Body in conjunction with the Pahang UMNO 2010 Convention.

The front page of the 24-page magazine flashed a black-and-white photo of Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib’s father, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, the second Prime Minister; while visiting and observing the lives of the people in Kampung Ganchong, Pekan.

LET’S FOLLOW THE WAYS OF THE PREVIOUS LEADERS

“Former leaders were willing to roll up their sleeves and meet the people. Why can’t we (today’s leaders and politicians) do it? Why can’t we follow the ways of our former leaders in serving the nation?

“Show our commitment... When we show our commitment, people will return (to us) because (in reality) they do not want the opposition. The people still want UMNO and Barisan Nasional because they know and appreciate the numerous deeds that UMNO and Barisan Nasional had done for the country and nation.”

HIS WORDS, HIS ACTIONS... Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib in action while delivering his 35-minute officiating speech.

“And if we can, God willing we will deliver. There are a lot more (for the nation’s development and the well-being of the people) that we will do,” said the nation’s number one leader.

In his 35-minute speech, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib also talked about his recent visit to India, where he had the opportunity to grasp India’s ruling party success formula – the Congress Party.

The party, which has a little bit more experience than UMNO, lost in their general election to the opposition but managed to recover and regain the trust of the people of India and continued ruling.

LET’S LEARN FORM THE INDIAN CONGRESS PARTY

“One of the secrets of their (the Congress Party) success was transformation. They made changes by introducing young leaders especially at places where they were defeated. They retained leaders at areas where they were strong. They did not touch the areas where their leaders were. New faces were introduced at areas where they were weak, and lost. And this showed improvement in the party,” he said.

The Congress Party, furthermore, said Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib, launched their efforts in the direction of helping and taking care of India’s needy society that needs assistance.

That was the reason why he stressed the importance of putting the people first especially the needy in this country. He recently gave directives to UiTM to accept the enrolments of 5,000 poor children every year to further their studies to the institution of higher learning.

OUR LEADER’S FRIENDLY HANDSHAKE... Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib did not disappoint those who wish to shake his hand. In this photo, he was seen shaking the hands of the ladies from the Pahang Foundation.

“We have to look after them... the children of the settlers, fishermen, general workers and all in need should be given the chance to be enrolled (into UiTM). Give (the children) the opportunity. Take care of them. Mind them...” he said.

HELP THOSE WHO EARN BELOW RM3,000

Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib also mentioned that he had approved extra funds to the Pahang Foundation in support of the efforts in helping the poor and needy – in response to the application forwarded by Dato’ Sri Adnan Yaakob, Pahang’s Menteri Besar.

“We must help people of all levels, not only the hardcore poor, but also those who earn RM2,000 and below, RM3,000 and below. These people need to be helped if we wish to be seen as a party that put the people first and care for their welfare.

“Let us be concerned for our people. Let us care for the people’s needs. If we fulfil our duties as per the Government policies, God willing we will succeed (to continuously win the hearts of our people),” he added.

Prior to that, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib emphasised that party members need to conduct self-evaluation based on the people’s assessment on them.

Typically in a democratic parliamentary system, he said, the opposition does not win the election, it is the Government that lose the election.

THE ECHOES OF THE PREVIOUS LOSSES

“Looking back, when we fail to win the two-third (2/3) majority of the Parliament seats and lost in the five states, the nightmares of our previous losses still echoes. And that is something that is not easy to forget.

PEMBELA RAKYAT’ SERVES ‘THE FOURTH ESTATE’… Backed with the words taken from ‘Pembela Rakyat’ Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib was seen explaining at the post-officiation press conference.

“Of course we cannot forget and as a political party, we have to stand and rise from our previous situation. And I am confident that UMNO is a saintly party that has done many good deeds in fighting for our religion, race and also the nation and will remain as the prime choice by the people of Malaysia,” he said.

And to all UMNO assemblymen, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib pleaded to them to question the reasons why they have decided to take up the responsibilities to be voted as YB.

“Ask this question to ourselves – why? Because I want to be the people’s saviour, to fight for the people. Then rise! That’s it... the reason to become a YB is not to apply for a weapon (licence). We have to work...,”said Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib.

He then continued by reminding the members to not make any mistakes and to not shoot themselves in the foot.

SLIM WIN IN 1999... WINNING WITH STYLE IN 2004

Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib, who is also Pekan’s Member of Parliament, tracked the history when he won by a small majority in the 1999 general election for the Parliamentary seat but bounced back later with a big majority in the 2004 general election.

“I was born in Pahang. I know what the Pahang people want. I know. That is why even though I endured the agony in Pekan in 1999, I did not run away from Pekan because I understand the people of Pekan. The people of Pahang still want UMNO!

“No matter what, we re-evaluate ourselves, we change the way we work, they way we treat people and the way we service people; they (the people) will come back to support UMNO and Barisan Nasional,” Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib added.
